Hair Extensions will behave as your own natural hair. Natural hair shed is normal and to be expected. (This is the hair which you would find in the plug hole or in your hair brush). On average you lose between 50-100 single hairs a day so it is normal that some of these hairs will remain trapped inside your hair extension bond. This can cause some matting during wear if you are not looking after your extensions correctly or having regular maintenance (please note that matting is not a normal part of wearing hair extensions). During maintenance and removals this loose shed hair can be brushed out, hence why regular maintenance and removal when needed is extremely important.
It is also normal to expect a small percentage of extension loss during the course of wear, approximately 10-20 strands. These strands can be refitted during your maintenance appointment. This does not apply to tape in extensions or keratin bonds. Tape and Keratin bond Extensions should not be coming out during wear. If you are experiencing this, this may indicates that you may not be following the aftercare correct. Contact us immediately should this happen.
Observing the following guidelines combined with the use of the correct aftercare products will extend the lifespan of your Hair Extensions. If you choose not to use the recommended products, it is at your own risk of deteriation of the bonds and the overall hair extension condition. I accept no liability in this event and the hair can be sent away for testing to confirm if anything has been used that shouldn’t.
Some clients report mild itching from the extensions, This is normal and usually lasts a few days in the first to second week after fitting. If you get itching after that, it may be that you need to wash your hair more thoroughly and frequently, especially if natural oils or products have built up around your roots. Some clients also report that the extensions are slightly uncomfortable to sleep on for the first few days but once the bond soften and settle in, they will be much more comfortable!
IMPORTANT: Do NOT wash your hair extensions for at least 48 hours after fitting Cleansing - Thoroughly brush your hair before washing it to make sure it is free from any knots or tangles. - Washing you hair should be done with your head in an upright position in the shower. You are strongly advised not to lean over the bath with your head upside down as this will cause your extensions to tangle! - Always use the recommended shampoo designed for the hair extensions you had fitted. - Do not use the traditional scrubbing motion as this may tangle the bonds and cause matting. use a gently up and down massaging motion all over the scalp and make sure the shampoo is gently massaged in-between the bonds, smooth the lather gently down to the mid lengths and ends. Ensure the shampoo is thoroughly rinsed out. - Do not dry your hair with a rubbing motion. Instead, gently blot and pat the excess water out. Be extremely careful if you wrap your hair in a towel.. this may cause the extensions to tangle. Never leave the hair to dry wrapped up in a towel!
Conditioning - Always use the recommended conditioner and conditioning treatment for the extensions you are wearing. Some conditioners have silicone additives which will cause a build up on the hair. - Condition the mid lengths and ends only. - Never apply conditioner over the bonds/tape as this will cause bond\adhesive breakdown and slipping. - Serums and hair oils should never be applied to the bonds. Only apply to the mids and ends of the hair. - using a deep conditioning hair mask weekly is highly recommended (we keep these in stock)
Drying - The bond is at its most vulnerable when it is wet so it is essential to thoroughly blow dry all your bonds first on a low heat setting, even if you intend to allow the rest to dry naturally. NEVER leave bonds\tape extensions damp for prolong periods of time as it will weaken them. - When blow drying your extensions, always use a low/mild heat and then always finish with the 'cold shot' setting. Your extensions will take longer to dry than natural hair so allow the extra time. - Do not brush your hair extensions when wet! After patting out the excess water, blow-dry your hair so its nearly dry and then you can section the hair and brush thorough in small sections. - NEVER EVER tie your hair up whilst it is wet - this will cause your extensions to clump together and matt!
Heated Styling Tools - Straighteners, Tongs and Heated curling tools can all be used but you must avoid the roots to ensure you do not touch the bonds as it will cause them to melt - Always use the recommended heat protection product before applying heat on your hair extensions. - Use the lowest heat setting possible on straighteners and heated styling tools as anything over 160 degrees can cause excessive breakage and damage to the hair extensions and also colour fading on the extensions. - Please remember that excessive and\or high heat will cause your hair extensions to fade, dry out quicker and the ends can snap off so try not to use heat on them every day.
Brushing - The recommended extension brush should always be used. These are designed to allow brushing at the root without damaging the bonds. we recommend Tangle Teezer brushes. - Section the hair into 3-4 rows, starting at the bottom row, supporting the hair at the bond. begin from the ends, using downward strokes, gradually working your way up to the roots. The flexible bristles on your extension brush will get in at the scalp above the bond and then bend over the bond without snagging. Repeat through all sections. do not miss out the bottom sections of your hair and don't be afraid to brush over the bonds, this is an important step! - Once a day separate the bonds\tape sections carefully with your fingers one by one, row by row as occasionally they can get tangled with the neighbouring bond. This is extremely important but please ensure you do not pull or break your natural hair.
Sleeping - Brush your hair thoroughly before bed and make sure the bonds are separated. - Tie hair in a loose low ponytail or preferably, a plait. The plait also produces nice waves for the following day! - When securing your hair for bed, use a fabric covered scrunchie or a no snag band. - Never sleep with your hair wet! - Some clients like to use a silk pillow case
Swimming - Always tie hair up (preferably in a plait to prevent matting) and where possible, we strongly advice you avoid pool and sea water on your hair extensions. - Always shampoo and rinse your hair immediately after swimming. - If you swim regularly, use a swim cap - Never leave wet hair tied up after swimming. Its very important to rinse/wash your hair as soon after swimming as possible. - Please note that chlorine can cause your hair extensions to discolour. If you have any concerns, please speak with us.
Exercise - Tie hair up (a plait is recommended to prevent tangling) and always wash thoroughly after working out. - Perspiration / sweat contains salt which can cause bond deteriation and can also cause the metal rings (Nano rings) to discolour. Sweating also means your hair is in a damp environment which is not good for the bonds.
Saunas / Steam Rooms - Regular use is not recommended. - For occasional use wrap dry hair in a towel. - Wash your hair after using a sauna/steam room.
Sunbeds and Sun - Always wrap dry hair in a towel fully before going on the sunbeds (even a stand up sunbed). This is VERY important! - We recommend that you wear a hat if you are sun-bathing or spending a lot of time in the Direct sun. - If you are using sun cream/ Tanning oils/lotions, Please ensure you keep your hair extensions tied up and off your shoulders/back etc. These products can discolour your extensions (especially blondes) and it can sometimes be very hard to remove this discolouration! We can not be held responsible for any discolouring caused to your hair extensions.
Styling Products - Styling products can be used but avoid products containing silicone and do not over-load your hair with product - Never apply products on the bonds. - Dry shampoo can be used, however make sure this is on your own natural root area only and use sparingly.
Colouring Your Extensions - Colouring\toning\purple silver shampooing of your hair extensions is done at your own risk and this is explained during a consultation. Because hair extensions are a natural product which has already undergone a colouring process to get them from their natural state to a hair extension form, There are no guarantees that the desirable result will be achieved, even if the colour service has been carried out by a professional. If you do decide to go ahead, Always perform a strand test first and AVOID the bonds. - We strongly advise against using bleach on your hair extensions
Cutting - Extensions should be cut using a completely different technique than natural hair, so always use a hair stylist who is experienced with cutting hair extensions in. Any cutting and blending of the extensions is undertaken at your own risk. - During your course of wear your extensions it is advised that you have a trim regularly to keep the ends looking pristine.
Wearing your hair extensions abroad
- We do not recommend wearing hair extensions abroad. Extreme heat, humidity, Sun and chlorine could cause your extensions to become dry, brittle and discoloured. If you plan on wearing your hair Extensions abroad, this will be at your own risk and discretion but please contact us as we will be able to recommend an aftercare plan and the use of correct products so that your hair extensions remain in the best possible condition if you do choose to wear them on holiday.
These guidelines may suggest that hair extensions are hard work, however once you have read thorough and you start getting in to your own routine, it will become second nature. Hair Extensions are not hard work but they are a commitment. You must ensure you follow all of the above aftercare advice to ensure your natural hair is not damaged and that your hair extensions remain in good condition. NV Hair Extensions will not be liable for any issues which occur if the correct aftercare has not been followed or should a client not have regular maintenance as required or not use the correct advised aftercare products. If you have any questions or need further advice, please get in contact and we shall be more than happy to assist.
